Pentre Mawr Park could benefit from a cash boost for Abergele

PROJECTS to help improve Abergele and Pensarn could get a cash boost.

Abergele town councillors met with Jim Jones, of Conwy County Council’s Strategic Prosperity along Conwy East (SPACE) programme, to discuss potential spending opportunities.

SPACE will be used to access Strategic Regeneration Area funds being made available on the North Wales Coast to help tackle the area’s priorities, with about £8million a year being awarded to the region for the next seven years.

Although Rhyl and Colwyn Bay are set to receive the majority of the funding to help benefit their regeneration schemes, news that Abergele and Pensarn will receive a share has been welcomed by councillors.

Cllr Delyth MacRae, Mayor of Abergele, said: “It is important Abergele is not forgotten in situations like this.

“There are several areas I would like to see the money used, including to help with improvements to the beach and Pentre Mawr Park.”

Mr Jones said his department is currently meeting with the relevant town and community councils in Conwy East to ensure they are informed and involved in the SPACE project.

Cllr Ron Peacock, of Gele ward, said: “We are here to do the best for the people of Abergele. If there is money there than it makes it easier to help carry out the work that we want to. There has been a lot of good work done in Pentre Mawr Park recently and we have other things we would like to do.”

Potential improvements to be looked at in Abergele and Pensarn include developing transport and environment links and education and skills opportunities.
A working party of Abergele Town Council members is to be launched to look at what policies should be the priority for the funding.

The North Wales Coast was designated an SRA in October 2008, becoming the third SRA in Wales. It seeks to ensure a long term sustainable future for the area.

No details have so far been released on the likely funding levels that would be made available to Abergele and Pensarn.
