New firework furore

DISAPPOINTED festive revellers have slammed Llandudno Town Council for cancelling a fireworks display for the second time.

Visitors to the town were expecting to see the display as a finale to the Christmas Parade on Saturday, but due to poor weather the fireworks were called off.

Poor weather was also reported as the cause for postponing the Bonfire Night display a month earlier.

According to a spokeswoman from Llandudno Town Council, the fireworks will not be used at all this year, but instead be put into storage until November 5 next year.
Local residents have been writing on the North Wales Pioneer website to share their anger over the cancellation.

A visitor with the username 'MrsSmitch' wrote: "I am appalled that the Council are worming their way out of the debate over the fireworks by blaming allegedly forecast rain and strong winds!?! [I] appreciate that it will cost the same to store the fireworks as it will to buy a whole new set for next year but feel that the town, particularly the children, deserve to have an annual fireworks display. If the same situation regarding the weather were to occur next year, does this mean we will be deprived again?"

And website user 'clare' wrote: "I think its disgusting that we have to miss out again - other places cope well with this weather and still have their events. Get a grip Llandudno Town council and stop letting us all down - these events are important to everyone!"

Cllr Brian Bertola who helped organise this year's Christmas Parade explained: "We made a one off decision to try as a climax to the parade to have the fireworks on December 5, which would have been absolutely fantastic, weather permitting. We had a weather report saying it would not be suitable and it was right.
"There are no proposals to do anything more as we are not going to risk it. The weather can't be relied on at all. We are not going to take the risk."

Despite the disappointment at the cancellation, Cllr Bertola was thrilled with the success of the parade.

He added: "I was worrying about organising it as there are many things which can go wrong, but it had a real, feel good factor. I've already been having comments from the public saying what a fantastic event it was, but you just had to see the faces of the children and the adults. And the crowds on Mostyn Street were enormous. I think it is growing as an event to go to."
