FAWLTY Towers opened its doors in Rhyl last week with not one, but two Basils.
Prestatyn's Centre Stage Theatre Company performed three classic episodes of the hit BBC comedy at Rhyl Town Hall.
A Touch of Class and The Kipper and the Corpse featured one of the group’s founding members Rob Armstrong in the role of the hotelier with a serious superiority complex.
Armstrong, who throughout the first episode, in which he gets duped by a con man posing as Lord Melbury, lacked the high tempo and frantic, harassed attitude which brings the comedy out of the character.
The highlights came when the comic situations started to reach their heights and the supporting cast, including a superb Manuel played by Gareth Davies, really helped bring the script alive.
Armstrong really came into his own in the second episode and the laughs started to flow freely.
Scenes involving Armstrong, deceased guest Mr Leeman and Manuel were fantastically acted, especially given the confides of the stage compared to the television studio.
In the third instalment, Basil the Rat, Paul Young took on the role of Basil while Armstrong swapped to Manuel
Young hit the ground running in the role, even aping Cleese’s hilarious walk to great effect.
Throughout the production was professional and well put together, apart from on overly long first episode, and was thoroughly enjoyable.
