Residents protest at Abergele street traffic

RESIDENTS are hoping research will highlight the traffic problems blighting their Abergele street.

Traffic monitoring has been going on in Kinmel Avenue, after people living in the area complained that the number of cars using the narrow two-way road, along with double parking had driven them to breaking point.

Stuart Kelly, who works from his home on Kinmel Avenue as a financial adviser, took to the street to vent his concerns at the problem and make others aware of the chaos that occurs on a daily basis at peak times.

Mr Kelly, who has met representatives of Conwy County Council to discuss the situation, said: “There are currently suggestions the road could become one-way and that is definitely something we would welcome as a means of resolving this situation.

“Something certainly has to be done here and I think the traffic monitoring showed just how busy this road is. I see the situation for myself every day. There is simply too much traffic along the roads and too many cars parking here for the width of it and it creates a lot of problems, particularly at times of school traffic.”

The road is frequently used as a shortcut to the town centre and Tesco supermarket from the Sea Road area of town, with Mr Kelly believing thousands of cars use it on a weekly basis.

The high level of parking on the road has been partly blamed on the current location of Abergele Surgery on the street, with the facility having very limited on-site parking.

Although the parking situation had been expected to improve when the surgery closes in the new year Mr Kelly fears potential developments on the site could have further repercussions for residents.

He said: “I understand a planning application has been made for a three-storey building to replace the surgery. If that is the case I can see several businesses being located in there and that will mean yet more parking on the road and cars coming along here.”

A spokeswoman for Conwy County Council confirmed a planning application has been made for the three-storey building of offices, which would include use for financial or professional services.

She added: “Regarding the traffic on Kinmel Avenue, we are currently analysing the data that was collected on-site last month.”
