RHYL'S roads are being neglected and ignored according to residents who fear they could crumble as winter sets in.

The state of Morley Road, River Street, John Street, Palace Avenue and Sandringham Avenue is causing concern to residents demanding action as concern grows that roads will deteriorate further this winter.

County councillor Ian Armstrong, who lives on Emlyn Grove, said he feels Rhyl West is treated as a 'poor relation' by Denbighshire County Council.

He said: “Highways in Rhyl West are being neglected. Side roads are being ignored. If we get a hard winter and get severe frost these roads are going to break up completely.

"If you don’t keep up with the roads, they are going to deteriorate. Why is Rhyl West always left as a poor relation?

“The main road coming into Rhyl along the promenade is starting to break up. If that is not done we are going to be left with major repair bills.

"It is not a good image for people visiting the town. I would like to see something done as soon as possible."

Cllr Armstrong described repair work to Maude Street, where two potholes were filled in as "not even half a job".

He said: “The whole road needs stripping off and re-doing. It is not doing people’s cars any good. Maude Street is a busy road, it is a cut through road.

“People are concerned about what is going to happen in the winter. All this money is coming down – where is it going?"

Maude Street resident Jackie Boan said: "The road is breaking up. The roads are far from good enough. They are not even up to standard.

"It is going to get worse in the winter. We want to take pride in our neighbourhood. It is a shame, everyone is trying to tidy the area up. I'd like them to come and sort it out."

A spokesperson for Denbighshire said: "Highways officers constantly monitor the condition of all the county's roads and Denbighshire has already carried out resurfacing on large areas of Rhyl this year.

"Resurfacing of John Street and Aquarium Street is currently programmed for October 8 but recently it was necessary to send contractors to refill potholes there in order to ensure the road is as safe as possible for road users.

"Further resurfacing works for other areas of Rhyl will be considered as part of a continual rolling programme of improvements as and when budgets allow."
