A MAN from Mold has been banned from the roads after he was stopped by police while drink-driving and speeding in Rhyl.

David Williams, 27, of Elm Drive, was handed a 12-month disqualification from driving at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court today (April 17).

He pleaded guilty to a charge of drink-driving during today’s hearing.

The court heard that, early on March 30, officers on patrol on the A525 in Rhyl saw a Ford Fiesta vehicle exceeding the 20mph speed limit by “some significant amount”.

Police caught up with the vehicle, which was “swirling from side to side,” and crossing the white line in the centre of road.

Williams was stopped, before returning a positive roadside breath test for alcohol.

He gave a reading of 58 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath (the legal UK limit is 35 micrograms per 100ml of breath).

A full-time welder who also works as a DJ at weekends, Williams was said to have no previous convictions.

He had been out with friends on the night in question and believed he was “fine to drive,” but began to “panic” when he saw a police car behind him.

Williams co-operated fully with officers after he was stopped, the court was told.

His driving ban will be reduced by 12 weeks if he completes a drink-driving rehabilitation course by November 15.

He will also pay a £400 fine, a £160 surcharge, and £85 in prosecution costs.
