The store was runner-up in the “outstanding employee/personal achievement” category, and was also nominated for the “customer excellence” prize.

Angela Sykes, of Denmore Premier Food Store, recalled seeing a small empty shop for sale in Rhyl with her family 39 years ago.

She said: “We all thought it had potential, so brought it and, over 39 years, developed it into Denmore Premier Food Store.

“We fell in love with the area and the wonderful community here in Rhyl.

“We think we won due to the fantastic team we have, including our staff, past and present, our brilliant suppliers, but most of all, our wonderful customers, old and new.

“We have been through two floods in this area and the COVID crisis but despite it all, working together, we have helped each other and got through it.

“We have also had some brilliant, fun times which we have also shared, such as open days, jubilees and street parties.”

Angela’s son, Seann, is now the person primarily in charge of the store, who she said works hard to develop it and maintain its friendly standards.

Her dad, Bill, now aged 96, still takes an interest in the store he helped set up in 1985.

She said: “We also really appreciate the work that Rhyl BID has put in.

“We were all hugely honoured to win the business longevity award, as all of the finalists deserved it for all of their efforts in Rhyl.

“Our staff were very pleased gaining the runners-up in outstanding employee award, and thank all who voted for them.”

More than 150 people attended the awards ceremony on March 5, including business representatives from the finalists, their guests, dignitaries and partnering organisations.
