A JOURNALISM course has been ranked in the UK’s top five by the industry’s national training body.

The 2013-14 results from the Certificate of HE in Journalism at Glyndwr University, Wrexham, put it in fourth place in the National Council for the Training of Journalists national results.

Students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in their NCTJ exams and portfolios to put the course fourth in the 2013-14 results for undergraduate journalism courses in the UK.

Course leader and senior lecturer Janet Jones said it was fantastic news for all the students and lecturers who had helped to make the course so successful.

“Editors across the country recognise the NCTJ results as the gold standard in journalism training so this is a wonderful endorsement of all their hard work and effort,” she said.

The one-year course is the only journalism course accredited by the NCTJ in North Wales and is run in partnership with NWN Media, publisher of the Leader series of newspapers in North Wales and Cheshire.

Graduates of the course are now working at newspaper titles across North Wales, Shropshire and Cheshire.

Barrie Jones, editorial director of NWN Media, said the students spent time in NWN Media newsrooms as part of the course giving them hands-on experience of dealing with live news.

“We’ve been proud to be involved with the course over the years and continue to see it as the perfect package for aspiring journalists.”

The 2013-14 results see Glyndwr University jumping 14 places in the table of 19 universities offering NCTJ courses to its undergraduates.

They also place the Wrexham university 25th out of a total of 67 NCTJ courses in the UK including post-graduate and private sector programmes.

The course, now in its seventh year, has introduced a sports reporting module to the 2014-15 programme and continues to work with NWN Media in giving students two days a week of work experience.
