A YOUNG woman woke up from a drunken sleep to find a man raping her.

Painter and decorator Michael McKinley, aged 29, was jailed for eight years at Mold Crown Court.

He denied rape and claimed that they had intercourse with her consent.

But McKinley of Marine Road in Prestatyn, was convicted by the jury and held his head in his hands when the guilty verdict was announced.

Judge Niclas Parry said that he had been convicted of what could only be described as a despicable rape.

He had taken advantage of a young woman in her late teens who had given up her time after the defendant persuaded her that he need consoling.

"She had shown you nothing but concern and kindness," the judge said.

That extended to allowing him to stay at her home.

"You knew she was drunk and in that condition she fell asleep. You raped her while she slept," he said, to satisfy his sexual urges and frustration.

He used no protection which underlined his lack of care.

"During the trial you displayed arrogance and contempt for the welfare of women generally," he said.

He had shown no remorse and had forced his victim to live her ordeal during trial.

Prosecuting barrister Mr Simon Rogers played a recording of a 999 call made to the police in which the victim could be heard sobbing.

He said that the defendant had split up from his girlfriend at the time, they went for a drink together, she allowed him to sleep on the floor that night but woke up to find him on top of her raping her.

Simon Mintz, defending, said that it was the defence case that sex took place with consent during the incident which dated back to April 2012.

Following the conviction, the jury heard a victim impact statement in which the young woman said that she had nightmares at night, it affected her in the day, and she would burst into tears for no apparent reason.

The court heard that the defendant and his current partner had six children between them.
