BUDDING Alan Sugars were put to the test last week in an event which saw young people bring business ideas to life in Rhyl.

Spoike, a specialist gym providing a service to under-16s, GoRookie, a popup space for an online apprenticeship matching service, ABC Book Cafe, focused on reading, book buying, exchange and literacy classes, Changing Rooms, Changing Lives, an enterprise for those preparing for job and education interviews and Rhyl Scoops, a start-up business looking to modernise the welsh seaside ice cream experience, were chosen as finalists in the Test Town competition, sponsored by the Carnegie Trust and organised at local level by a Coleg Llandrillo, Denbighshire County Council and Rhyl City Strategy.

The keen entrepreneurs were given training at Rhyl College before heading out in the town and running their business ideas.

GoRookie, an idea put forward by Edward Shorney of Bridgend, was crowned the winner during a ceremony in Rhyl Town Hall last Sunday.

Mr Shorney received a cheque for £500 and will go forward to take part in the grand final in Cambridge in October with a chance of winning £10,000.

A special award was also presented by Councillor John Bellis to ABC book cafe, a group from Prestatyn High School, for the business showing the most social enterprise.

Emily Hesketh, 17, of Changing Rooms, Changing Lives termed Test Town as a “amazing opportunity” whilst Kate Isherwood, Emma Dixon, Daniel Taylor and Louise Ainsworth, of RhylScoops, said they felt “honoured” to support Rhyl through supplying high quality ice-cream.

Stephanie Harding, enterprise champion for Rhyl College and member of the test town team, added: “All ideas were innovative and also of a very socially conscious nature which made them stand out from other local TestTowns so far.

"All entrepreneurs rose to the challenges and showed excellent selling and customer service skills.

"Jim and Melissa, our mentors from Carnegie UK Trust, were truly inspirational."

The Grand Final will take place on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11.
