PLANS are being drawn up for the multi-million pound development of Rhyl's Royal Alexandra Hospital.
Health bosses have started the design process which will see the Grade-II listed hospital transformed into a new community hospital serving North Denbighshire.
In November 2013, health minister Mark Drakeford approved initial plans to transform the hospital under Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board'’s £22million proposal to build a health hub to serve the community.
A health board spokesman said: "The process to shape the design of the new community hospital in North Denbighshire is underway.
"The new integrated community hospital will replace the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Prestatyn Community Hospital and will be developed on the Royal Alexandra Hospital site.
"The original Royal Alexandra Hospital is an ornate Victorian building and a key element of the design will be to incorporate the Grade II listed building.
"Alongside refurbishment of the original building, proposals include the development of a new in-patient ward block to complement the hospital’s outpatient facilities."
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has appointed the architects and design team and is now working closely with stakeholders including clinical staff, the Denbighshire Council, the voluntary sector and patient representatives to develop the design and layout of the new Hospital.
The new purpose built hospital will boast a range of outpatient clinics, X-Ray, diagnostics, therapy services and video conferencing services, plus inpatient beds and beds for patients with mental health issues.
The Rhyl site was chosen due to it's size and location and it is hoped the new hospital could be open by 2017 bringing back community hospital beds to the site and replacing some of those lost after the closure Prestatyn Community Hospital.
The Welsh Government approved the first stage of the business case process last December.
