Abergele toddler suffering from cancer and kidney disease inspires fundraising drive

THE parents of a little girl who is battling cancer and kidney disease are going all out to reach their huge fundraising target in the hope of making an equally huge difference to a children’s hospital.

Chris, 25, and Bethan Spinks, of Abergele, were stunned when their daughter Louise, who is turning 19-months this week, was diagnosed with a Wilms' tumour last August, a type of kidney cancer in children.

Louise had the tumour removed along with her right kidney, ovary and fallopian tube and surrounding lymph nodes but doctor found that Louise had an underlying kidney disease called denys-drash syndrome which would result in a future kidney transplant.

She was also diagnosed with congenital nephrotic syndrome - causing protein to leak into her urine.

Louise has had 11 operations and beaten a number of setbacks including when a fault in a dialysis machine caused her to go into cardiac arrest.

Her parents have vowed to raise £500,000 to buy new dialysis machines for Aldey Hey’s D2 ward and renal equipment.

Mrs Spinks, 26, who takes Louise to Liverpool five times a week for dialysis, said : “When we found a lump in her stomach we knew in our heart of hearts what it was.

“She has come so far. She has an op last week to remove her final kidney and fit new dialysis lines. She is very cheeky now - always smiling, always laughing.

“Raising money for the hospital means so much. Just saying thank you isn't enough for giving our daughter her life back so many times.”

The couple who also have a son, seven-year-old Taylor, have already raised thousands by carrying out walks and coffee mornings. A garden party has been planned aswell as a charity auction and bike rides.

Mrs Spinks added: “Louise has been in remission since February but she has to be cancer free for two years before she is eligible for a transplant - we count down the months.”
