Inspirational Kinmel Bay girl gears up for secondary school

AN inspirational little girl who sees the world in black and white is gearing up for secondary school.

Tyla Rich, aged 10, of Parc Tudur, Kinmel Bay, who suffers with achromotopsia, a rare genetic condition that leaves her completely colourblind, has been accepted to Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan secondary school in Abergele.

Proud mum Kara, a practice development nurse working across North Wales, said: “When Tyla was six weeks old we were told Tyla would never be able to see and would never be able to live a normal life without the support from a special school. Ysgol Hirraddug in Dyserth took Tyla knowing her disabilities and gave her every encouragement to involve herself with mainstream school life.

“None of this would ever of been possible if it wasn’t for the support given to us. I truly believe as a parent that Tyla would not be the little girl she is today without the support and dedication from the staff and headmaster at the school.

“Tyla’s teachers over the last five years have given her every opportunity to give her the best start in life, making her believe that she can do whatever she wants in life.”

Tyla, who only has limited vision, also suffers with a severe intolerance to bright light and glare – as well as an involuntary and uncontrollable movement of the eyes, is taking part in ongoing genetic trials with medics in Leicester.

Kara, who had previously lived in Dyserth before moving to Kinmel Bay, said: “Tyla has two support workers, Amy McGuiness and Emma Howe, both of which have supported Tyla through everything. The head and all the teachers and the school have never treated Tyla any different to any other child at the school, and as a parent you couldn’t ask for more.

“Over the next few months, we are going to be saying goodbye to the school for the last time, to all her teachers the head, her support staff and Denbighshire Visual Impairment Team who have been such a massive part of her life since she was three-years-old. The school has given Tyla the confidence, knowledge and that little extra something, and as a parent I will never be able to ever thank them enough for that.”

Tyla will start at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan in September.

“She is looking forward to it,” added Kara.

“She can’t wait. It is amazing how confident she is."
