New kite surfing school opens in Rhyl

A KITE surfing school could help turn Rhyl into a centre of excellence for the sport, its owner has said.

The Pro-Kite Surfing School opened on the site of a former unused toilet block, located near the Sun Centre on East Parade, after planning permission was granted by Denbighshire Council.

Simon Jones, 39, who has been teaching kite surfing for the past four years, said it could make the resort a centre of excellence for kite surfing which is set to make its debut at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

He said: “We can cater for everything from novice to experienced kite surfers.

“I’ve been travelling the world teaching kite surfing and I’ve been asking my students what they want and I have tried to cater for that here. We are right in the centre of Rhyl and there are loads of other things to do. My vision is I want to get people down here kite surfing and I want them to stay.”

The facility features changing facilities, showers and a member’s lounge.

Simon, of Kinmel Bay, said he is in discussions with Denbighshire Council about holding an annual kite surfing competition and hopes to attract members of Team GB to train in the area.

Rhyl councilor Brian Blakeley, vice chair of Denbighshire Council, said: “A facility like this helps bring people to the town and helps turn our town around.

“This is what we need.

“Simon is teaching and showing what can be done. Showing that we have got one of the best coasts and seafronts.

“Once they are here they can explore the rest of the town. We need to put Rhyl back on the map.”

Simon added: “The interest so far has been fantastic. I have had lots of support. People have been very excited about the opening.”

Cllr Huw Jones, Denbighshire’s Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure and Youth said: “I’m lost for words at the transformation of this redundant facility into an exciting new venture that will benefit both the local community as well as visitors to the town.

“This is another important piece of the jigsaw to regenerating Rhyl, and Pro Kite Surfing have capitalised on the magnificent beaches and facilities we have to offer in the area.”
