Council hopes events will boost tourism in Rhyl and Prestatyn

A SIX-year plan to increase the number of events held in Denbighshire is set to be approved.

Denbighshire Council is set to build on the success of Rhyl Air Show and the Proms on the Prom events with its events strategy for 2014-2020 which aims to ensure events make a meaningful contribution to the county's economy.

Council bosses also hope it will raise the profile of Denbighshire as a destination.
The plan is expected to be adopted by Denbighshire Council's Cabinet during a meeting next week (April 29).

The report said: "The strategy has been produced to address the need for change in the way Denbighshire supports and manages events in the county, and maximises the opportunities to achieve an improved economic impact.

"The key focus of the document is aimed at ensuring that events make a meaningful contribution to the economy of the county and that this is measured effectively.

"It is also of primary concern that the visitor experience at events is of the highest quality.

"This in turn will ensure that Denbighshire’s reputation for hosting events is recognised and new events are attracted to the county as a result.

"The vision outlined in the event strategy is that By 2020 Denbighshire will have a vibrant programme of well managed events spread across the seasons and locations in Denbighshire, which contribute to the local economy, creating additional visitor spend."

Last year Rhyl Air Show saw between 140,000 and 150,000 people flock to the area and Proms on the Prom, which featured Britain's Got Talent finalists the Johnson Brothers, attracted more than 10,000 during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

During a press briefing announcing the closure of the Sun Centre earlier this year Jamie Groves, the council's head of communications, marketing and leisure, said the council was looking to increase the number of events in the county to offset the loss of the attraction.

Challenges set out in the plan include ensuring economic value is maximised, marking events to increase attendance, stay and spend, and securing additional funding to develop events.
