A RESEARCH project about Denbigh’s troops that died during the First World War has been backed by thousands of pounds.

The Denbigh Events Group (DEG) has gained £9,000 funding from the Big Lottery to stage an educative series that aims to bring the fallen soldiers listed on Denbigh war memorial to life.

The project, titled ‘Denbigh Remembers the Fallen’, will see the creation of hundreds of cards detailing information about the lives of each of the men that died during the war, which will be handed out on Remembrance Sunday and to schools and nursing homes.

The project will also design booklets for schoolchildren that discusses Denbigh’s varied experiences during the war, in various battles, such as Flanders Field and the Somme, soldiers’ letters home to their family, and the types of medals that were awarded.

Cllr Jones said: "Some letters home are so poetic and detailed. They were young teenagers fighting a war they didn't really understand for our future.

"We will never be able to thank them enough for their bravery and sacrifice.

"There are no words, that is why we must never forget."

Charities and voluntary organisations such as Denbigh Archives, Denbigh Army Cadets, Mentir Iaith, Grwp Cynefin will join the DEG's research project to produce the cards.

The series will also discuss the important role of Denbigh women, who were encouraged to join the Voluntary Aid Detachment based in the Drill Hall on Love Lane, and set up working groups such as sewing parties that made clothing for the sick and wounded.

It is hoped the funding will also enable the DEG to purchase memorabilia from the war period that will accompany an assembly tour around each school in the town.
