CUSTOMERS of a community cafe in Prestatyn have been "touched by an act of kindness".

A benefactor has stepped in to replace an information board stolen from the Salford Children's Holiday Camp community cafe.

The Journal reported last month of the worry caused to many frequent customers, who were concerned that cafe had been closed down due to its absence.

Gill Smith, organiser and vice-chair of the management committee of the charity, said: "After seeing the article in The Journal, we had an offer the next day to pay for the cost of a new sign - with a chain and padlock.

"The donor is called Alan Pollit - he is a Salford man who now lives near Prestatyn. He has known of the camp for many years through friends who have been and supported the camp when we were trying to re-open it a few years ago."

The cafe, on Victoria Road West opposite Clwyd Carpets, opened in January on a shoestring budget of £40 every Wednesday from 12pm until 3pm, on the site of the former camp established in 1926to provide free holidays for disadvantaged children from Salford.

The camp – known affectionately as the Jam Butty Camp – was saved by a petition which attracted more than 1,300 signaturesafter facing closure by Salford City Council in 2014 .

Ms Smith added; "We have all been very touched by this act of kindness and we will soon be able to communicate with our residents once again."

"I would like to thank Alan for his generosity in supporting Salford Children's Holiday Camp Community Café - raising funds is an ongoing challenge and this support enables us to make the most of our limited resources."
