CROWDS of steam engine enthusiasts gathered across the coast to catch a fleeting glimpse of the return of an icon.

Onlookers waited at various points along the Flying Scotsman 60103's route, hoping to catch a glimpse of arguably the world's most famous train as it came hurtling through Prestatyn, Rhyl and Abergele & Pensarn stations on its way to Holyhead.

Reaching Prestatyn first at 11.30am - on an overcast Saturday, September 22 - more than 150 people gathered at the station.

Steam engine enthusiast Steve Fenner, of Prestatyn, said: "Everyone was very excited and watching out along the track for a first glimpse of it.

"Around a hundred and fifty people crowded onto the footbridge and platform of Prestatyn station as the Flying Scotsman steamed past on it's way to Holyhead.

"No one was disappointed as the engine driver blew the whistle as it approached and flew through with it's coaches full of steam train enthusiasts"

Joining fellow enthusiasts in Prestatyn down the track, more than 30 people filled a footbridge near Knightly's Fun Park in Towyn in slightly sunnier weather to catch the train on its way from Rhyl to Abergele.

Barrie Carter, a lifelong fan of steam engines who spotted the Flying Scotsman in Towyn, said: "I felt like I was a child again, with that feeling you get in you’re stomach when you’re really excited.

"There was in more than 30 people on the bridge, and more people stood further down, and I think everyone who was watching and waiting felt the same anticipation.

"It was windy all day although the sun was softly shining, but no matter what weather seeing such a historic engine was not a opportunity to be missed."
