CHILDREN from a nursery enjoyed a day of play at a 'construction site'.

Daisy Chains Bodnant, based at Bodnant Community School on Nant Hall Road, Prestatyn, took delivery of a set of hard hats, high-visibility vests and construction site safety signs from Wales & West Housing and Castlemead Group for their construction-themed play area.

As well as being used for play and teaching new skills, the equipment will help teach the children – aged between three and four – about the dangers of 'live' construction sites.

Sammy Beattie, from Daisy Chains Bodnant, said: “We are so grateful to Wales & West Housing and Castlemead for their very kind donations to our outdoor area.

“The children will have so much fun re-enacting roles in our construction site, using real equipment.

"This site will help them learn important issues involved in construction, such as safety, teamwork and communication.

“This is so important – for the children to be able to 'play' in roles they observe in day-to-day life or see their parents and grandparents do on a daily basis.

"It builds confidence, reassurance and social interaction, which are valuable life skills.”

Faye Sharp and Sammy Beattie of Daisy Chains brought the children to meet Joe O’Donnell, director of Wrexham-based construction firm Castlemead, and Alison Hammans, development officer for Wales & West Housing, at the future play area.

The donation is part of a series of community benefits, being delivered by Wales & West near its new 20-home development at the former Prestatyn police station site off Victoria Road, which is being built by Castlemead and is expected to be completed by next summer.

Wales & West Housing deputy chief executive Shayne Hembrow said: “We are passionate about making a difference within the community and so were delighted to get involved when we heard about the construction play area at the nursery school.”

Mr O’Donnell said: “We work with communities across North Wales and as a responsible developer committed to raising awareness of construction site safety, we were happy to provide the equipment.

"It was great to meet the children face-to-face and I’m sure all of the new gear will be put to good use for play purposes and learning about the importance of health and safety in construction.

"Hopefully we might be able to inspire a few of them to take up careers in construction in the future as well.”
