ANY thieves who break into a Bodelwyddan community centre could find themselves robbed of their vision by fog.

As the Journal went to press, eight Bodelwyddan Town Councillors were meeting to vote on the installation of a cutting edge security system for the Community Centre on Swn Y Dail, following repeated acts of vandalism on the £100,000 refurbishment.

The suite of security options to be discussed will include portable 4G enabled CCTV cameras that will be supervised 24 hours a day and Zero Vision Fog Barriers provided by security firm Verisure.

Cllr Richard Mainon, mayor of Bodelwyddan, said: “As we will have our Town Clerk working there by herself, we need to have Lone Worker security protocol. Say somebody broke in to have a row or intimidate the clerk, all she would need to do is lock her door, press a button and wait for a security professional to arrive from a site within 10 minutes away.

" The cameras are activated only when there is an intruder and are then monitored by working for the company. Rather than putting in unmanned CCTV and react to damage after the fact, this is a more proactive solution.

"We are also discussing a fog screen that could fill our hallway from floor to ceiling in 15 seconds.

“It’s equivalent to the SAS throwing in a smoke grenade. The fog won’t burn, choke or harm anyone - it’s not abrasive. It just robs any offenders of their vision.

“If they can’t see their hand in front of their face, they can’t steal anything or do any real damage."

“It could be seen as draconian, however it can’t be deployed by us at the council. Only a highly trained security professional can deploy the fog as a last resort should someone break in."

The Journal reported in June of the community centre's original opening date towards the end of this month or the beginning of August having to be delayed following an act of vandalism.

Cllr Mainon added: “After seeing the story in The Journal about the vandalism at the community centre, we were contacted by Verisure who have been very community minded and offered us security options at a fraction of the price.

"We did have security shutters installed previously, but we decided to remove them because what kind of message does that send if our community centre looks like a fortress?

“After spending a six figure sum and emptying our coffers completely, this new system will help us safeguard our newest asset against, what is fortunately, an extreme minority of our residents."
