FOOTAGE captured appears to show two youths trying to break into cars in Meliden.

The incident happened in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, July 15, just before 4am.

The would-be thieves were captured on cctv. Two youths are seen approaching a driveway - one keeps a look out as the other proceeds to check three cars.

One seems to be using a torch or a light on his phone to look inside the vehicles and tries to open them before giving up and walking down the road.

Elin Hughes-Jones - whose released the footage - is warning those living in Meliden and surrounding areas to be vigilant.

The people targeted were her mum and dad. Her neighbours also reported to police "suspicious activity" on their driveway.

Elin said: "My dad had the cctv fitted after what was, fortunately, an unsuccessful attempted break-in a few years ago. Luckily we haven't had much need for it, but in instances like these, it is good we have it.

"The attempted break-in was reported to the police - a neighbour notified them.

"We were asked by a neighbour, who knew we had cctv to check the camera, as he was woken up at about 3.50am by noise outside. When he opened the curtains, he saw someone trying to break into his car. He banged on the window and they ran off.

"Upon seeing the footage my parents were obviously shocked and upset, but just glad the youths weren't able to get into the cars and that nothing was stolen."

Elin, who lives around the corner from her mum and dad, is hoping the footage will remind residents to keep everything locked and valuables hidden.

"It makes me feel a bit uneasy and just reinforces why it is so important to be security conscious and to keep cars locked and valuables out of sight. Same for windows in the house," Elin added.

"It has made me realise how important it is to keep things locked.

"When the youths walked off, it would seem they then continued to try other cars on the road before they were scared off by a neighbour."

Earlier this year, car and van owners were warned to be on their guard following a spate of thefts in Prestatyn.

A neighbour, living down the street, reported the incident after they witnessed people acting suspiciously on their drive.

A spokesperson from North Wales Police said: "We had a report about 4am of two people on a driveway dressed in black - suspicious activity/circumstances. Officers carried out a search."
