VANDALS have targeted a Rhuddlan flower display ahead of judging for Britain in Bloom.

As volunteers in the town gear up for the competition judges' arrival on Wednesday, August 1, an arrangement spelling 'Rhuddlan' in flowers outside Pengwern College, on Sarn Lane, has remained vacant for more than a week after vandals uprooted the display.

The display showcased the work of students at Pengwern College as part of this year's RHS Wales and Britain in Bloom entries. The project's organisers have replaced the display with a note reading "Plants have been removed due to vandalism - They will return".

Brenda Taylor, chair of Rhuddlan Environmental Group responded: "I was disgusted when I was told about the mess at the college.

"Anyone spoiling a project like this does not know how upsetting it must be for the people involved, it's hard to understand why anyone would do this. We haven't had anything like this happen in the town for years.

"I met the students at the community centre on the Wednesday, July 4 and they had all been so excited about their project.

Wrecking it is beyond the pale."

The display was located on a plot that has received about £5,000 work of landscaping in recent years, developed following an extensive clear up operation with the addition of sleepers, tree surgery and decorative ornaments.

Mrs Taylor added: "As chairperson of the Rhuddlan Environment Group I would like to offer to replace the plants and work with the students from Pengwern."

North Wales Police are appealing for information on the incident.
