A PRESTATYN student who was present at the Manchester terror attack has been honoured at an awards ceremony.

Colleg Llandrillo Menai A Level Students recently attended awards ceremony to celebrate achievement across the A-level and International Baccalaureate Diploma courses at the Rhos-on-Sea campus, where 18-year-old Annabel Wilkinson from Prestatyn scooped the inaugural A-level Special Achievement Award.

The award is presented to a student who has done something exceptional over their time at Coleg Llandrillo – be that academic or personal.

Catrin Keller, Welsh Baccalaureate co-ordinator, explained: “Last year on her first AS-level exam day, I had an early morning email from Annabel asking to see me as soon as possible.

"The previous night she had been to the Arianne Grande concert at Manchester Arena, and we all know what a tragic night that was.

"The impact of this experience had shaken her badly, but she still managed to sit the exam on that day.

“Overall, she has been an excellent student throughout her time here at Coleg Llandrillo. She has proven herself a motivated eager learner who can work well independently as well as working well within a team of peers.”

The ceremony, which was hosted by Ms Keller and A Level curriculum co-ordinator Andy Esparon , ten awards up for grabs.

Also earning recognition for their hard work was Xixi Birkinshaw, 18, from Abergele, who achieved a very rare feat indeed, winning t both A-level Academic Achiever of the Year and Best Performance in Arts.

Her Arts tutor, Gill Neale, said: “Xixi has shown exceptional commitment through excellent attendance and production of work of the very highest standard. The tutors fell that she has been the best A-level learner they’ve had in Art.”

Other award-winning students included Tiernan Hughes of St Asaph, who won Best Performance in Science, Mathematics or Psychology and Ebony Davies from Abergele who won A-level Academic Achiever of the Year.
