A BROWNIE leader was presented with an award after completing 50 years of service.

Linda clews, 75, assistant leader (Tawny Owl) of 4th Rhyl Brownies, was honoured for her achievement at the county annual review

Linda, who volunteers alongside her daughter Dorothy Henley, who is the leader of 4th Rhyl Brownies, was "gobsmacked" to receive the accolade - initially she was led to believe she was attending a ceremony where someone else was picking up an award.

Linda, who started guiding in Manchester, said: "I thought I was seeing a friend called Linda picking up an award, so I was gobsmacked when they picked me.

"I was a brownie myself as a little girl. When I turned 18, I was a leader in Manchester and it just carried on from there and then I came to live in Wales.

"My daughter runs the brownies here and I have a granddaughter Aoife, aged eight, in the brownies and Grace, 12, in the guides and my other daughter Emma was once a leader - so they've all had a go.

"It is lovely for the girls. It helps them with different skills and making friends. I think it must be in my blood."

Linda, who also has son Harry, moved to Rhyl in 1971. In her time here she has been involved in guides, brownies and even has been district commissioner in Abergele.

"It all comes down to the time you put in it it - it is like everything else," she added.

Dorothy said: "My mum has helped so many girls over the years. I started in the brownies because of her."
