DESPITE the current heatwave, winter is on its way to a corner of Abergele.

The Abergele District Action Group have teamed up with the Arts Council Of Wales 'Noson Allan' scheme to stage Shakespeare's The Winter’s Tale in the ‘secret' walled garden at Pentre Mawr Park.

The comedy romance will be performed by the Festival Players Theatre Company, a troupe from Gloucester who have been touring professional outdoor Shakespeare productions for over 30 years.

Alison Pring, chair of the Abergele District Action Group, said: “I am very excited and proud to be involved in enabling this very professional touring company to perform at the ‘secret ‘walled garden in Pentre Mawr Park.

"Our group’s aim is to break down boundaries and bring communities together and there is no better way than through the arts.

"We are so grateful to the Arts Council Of Wales for supporting and promoting this event through their 'Noson Allan' scheme."

'Noson Allan' helps local organisations to bring professional performances into community buildings at subsidised prices.

The Winter’s Tale will be presented in full costume by an all-male cast of six players, filling multiple roles.

It tells the story of Leontes, King of Sicilia, whose obsessive envy sets in motion a train of events which affects two kingdoms and two generations with jealousy and joy, revenge and romance, loss and discovery, remorse and revelry – all culminating in amazing revelations.

Music has been specially written for The Winter's Tale by folk star Johnny Coppin, front man of cult 1970s folk-rock group Decameron.

It features original songs and instrumentals involving the entire cast.

The Winter’s Tale will be performed on Thursday, July19. Gates open at 6pm for a 7pm performance.
