A burgeoning student led soup kitchen in Rhyl is expanding this summer.

Following an Easter holiday "sleep out" in Rhyl in April, University of Liverpool student Sally Harland and her team are marking the end of their exams with a pop-up, three course soup kitchen.

For their second event, the growing team is working with Coltman's Rumblin' Tum Cafe on Sussex Street and 4 the Community's sanitary towel Moontime Project, at St Mary's Church to provide three hot meals for rough sleepers in Rhyl, sanitary resources, clothing, hair cuts and company.

Miss Harland, 20 of Prestatyn, said:"It is definitely expanding, many are volunteering on now that have just got involved through no connection to us.

"It is many people in their late teens, early twenties helping out which I think speaks a thousand words, that our generation is not just about watching reality TV and getting drunk, we have compassion for the whole community."

In addition to new members from her peer group, one of the rough sleeper who visited the group for Sally's Sleep out is now volunteering his time with the group to discuss to discuss mental health and homelessness.

Mis Harland added: "At our last event we helped a man who is now a vital member of the team

"He now has a job, a place to live and is wanting to give back in anyway possible.

"He is the true example of how just support off others can practically change your negative thoughts and help get you off the streets."

"Rhyl is a lot more deprived than many think, people need our help more and more. The town is getting revamped, which is amazing and will attract more tourism, but there’s still general suffering - but our cause is here.

"The plan definitely would be to expand across North Wales when our charity is registered as we’d be able to get funding to do so, however Rhyl will continue to be our base until we have a regular soup kitchen set up and an experienced team on hand."

Soup Kitchen for All takes place from 10am until 6pm, at 19 Bedford Street on Saturday, July 14.
