A FIRE at a Prestatyn holiday camp is being treated as arson.

North Wales Police and North Wales Fire and Rescue is appealing for any information on the blaze at Pontins on Barkby Avenue, Prestatyn, which consumed a pile of bedding and mattresses.

Fire crews – two from Rhyl and one from Abergele – spent more than four hours tacking the fire on Wednesday of last week.

An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I live really close to Pontins and it was really black everywhere because of all the smoke.

“When you looked into the field near Pontins, there were some mattresses alight with a bunch of people standing around just watching the fire.

“I rang the fire brigade because it looked like it was out of control and it was beginning to stink.

“When I called them, apparently nobody had already contacted them so it looks as though it was deliberate.”

The fire generated so much heat it caused damage to a nearby chalet and wooden fence.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “We were called at 3.20pm to an incident involving a large quantity of mattresses and bedding in the open at Pontins. Fire crews called a stop to the incident at 7.48 pm.

"A forklift was required to remove what was left of the mattresses.”

The spokesman confirmed: “We are treating the incident as deliberate.”

A police spokesman said: “We are conducting a joint investigation with the fire service. The incident is being treated as arson.”

Pontins has ben approached by the Journal for comment.

Anyone with any information on the incident is urged to call 101 quoting reference number 18300069335.
