Shooting has been completed on a short film starring a former Coronation Street actor.

The final scene of Grandpa God, which has been made by Prestatyn production company Canned Media, was finished more than six months after filming began.

The heart-warming film stars Bruce Jones, best known for playing Les Battersby for more than 10 years in the famous ITV soap, in the title role as the nameless grandfather with a god complex and dementia.

Director Lee Howard said: “When I first got this script, I thought it would just be a bit of fun.

"Looking at it now, I can’t believe how well it has translated to film.

“It’s come out completely how we wanted it to and we haven’t had to compromise at all, which is unusual.”

The première of Canned Media’s other current production, Womble, starring Johnny Vegas, has been delayed due to editing requirements.

But Lee said: "The difference between Womble and Grandpa God is huge. One has a small cast of actors and crew whereas one has a couple of hundred people working on it.

“Because of the size of Grandpa God, we were able to edit it as we go, so we’re already about a third of the way through editing the final film.”

Womble focused on using a younger group of amateur actors and production staff.

The original script was penned by 20-year-old screenwriter Addie Davies, from Abergele, and the film co-directed by Adam Dawson of Prestatyn.

The second lead was played by Lucy Connah, 23, from Abergele.

The final scene was shot at the Blue Lion in Cwm, near Dyserth, and featured its youngest cast member, Lee's nine-year-old daughter, Jessica Howard, who was working on her third film with Canned Media.

Lee said: “We had these tear sticks that you rub under your eyes to make you cry, but after 15 minutes and no tears, we knew they weren’t really working.

“Jessica asked us 'do you just want me to cry?' and then burst into tears. Her nose was running and her eyes were streaming – everything.

“She delivered stunning performance in the film and even received the only standing ovation from all the cast and crew during filming.”

The crew of Grandpa God will now continue editing the final cut of the film, which will première at the Rhyl Little Theatre on Friday, September 14 before opening the Wicked Wales film festival in November where the cast, director and crew will be holding a Q&A.

A 'wrap' party is set to be held at the Blue Lion pub in Cwm on September 8.
