Three cardiac nurses will walk 24 miles this weekend to improve the quality of care for their patients.

Glan Clwyd Hospital nurses Cheryl Wilson, Janice Blackwell and Claire Webster will walk from Prestatyn to Llandudno to raise funds for much-needed equipment for cardiology ward four and the coronary care unit (CCU) this Saturday.

Ms Wilson said: “Coming into hospital can feel scary and unfamiliar. The staff on ward four cardiology and CCU like to make the patients experience as comfortable as we possibly can by going that extra mile.

“Support will help fund some of the added extras – big and small – that go above and beyond what the NHS is able to provide, making a real difference for patients and their families when they need it the most.”

Some of the items on the nurses’ wish list include replacing a worn out manual blood pressure machine, a small radio, over bed table, a cabinet for personal belongings and cooling fans.

“”The NHS can only provide the essentials for a patients’ needs, yet each patient experiences healthcare in a unique and individual way.

“We are currently trying to raise funds towards numerous items. For example, at the moment we only have two reclining chairs available, which some patients need when they find it difficult or are unable to sit in a regular chair.

“In the case of the chairs, they need to be hardwearing because of frequent use and fully cleanable for hygiene purposes and cost of about £800 each.”

The trio have currently raised £240 mark of their £1,000 goal, and will meet at the Jolly Sailor pub in Prestatyn at 9am on Saturday for the walk to Llandudno pier.
