THE quick action of a husband and wife, together with a mystery mum and daughter, helped save the lives of two teenage boys who had gone into the sea to recover a football.

The boys were taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital by ambulance following the drama, which unfolded in Rhyl, off West Parade, some time after 10pm on Saturday.

One of the boys showed signs of hypothermia and was falling in and out of consciousness. The second teenager was conscious but very cold.

The first casualty got into difficulties after going into the water to try to retrieve the ball. The second boy went into the water to try to help his friend.

Lisa Jones, who lives nearby, rushed down to the scene with her husband, Tony, after hearing cries of “help!”.

The desperate cries turned out to be from the father of one of the boys, who had climbed up a flag pole to try to summon help.

Also at the scene were a woman and daughter, understood to be new to the area, who arrived with blankets and a life ring.

Lisa said the actions of the pair "probably" saved the lives of the boys.

She said: "They had blankets and hugged the boys, using their body hear to keep them warm, and also threw in the life-ring.

"If it wasn't for the lady and daughter, the boys wouldn't be here today. I knew the lady and her daughter but only to chat to.

"My husband and I heard shouting and screaming, someone screaming 'help! help!'.

"You sometimes think it is a hoax but we ran up to see what was going on.

"We heard the boys had gone into the water, not realising there were rocks. The dad of one of the boys called the ambulance service.

"When we got there initially, the boys were shaking. The lad that first went in, wasn't very responsive.

"My husband checked his cuts first and just asked the lady to keep talking to him. I checked the lad's friends's feet too. It was superficial cuts.

"My husband guided the lifeboat in using a torch on his phone. We helped check the lads and keep them warm"

The coastguard at Holyhead were alerted following a number of 999 calls from a party of teenagers on Rhyl beach, near the harbour entrance.

Coastguard teams and Rhyl inshore lifeboat were paged and were on the scene within five minutes of the call.

Lisa, who has four sons, added: "It is scary how easily you can get caught up in the water.

"School get visits from the RNLI and talk about what to do if someone is in the water.

"The action that the woman and her daughter took was fantastic, excellent. They just tried to keep them warm and comfy."

Paul Frost, duty coxswain at Rhyl Lifeboat, said: "The first man was put on oxygen and given other casualty care.

"He was warmed in a blanket and monitored whilst the ambulance arrived. The second casualty was warmed up also. The men were transferred to an ambulance and taken to hospital.

"Even though the air temperature is warm, the water is still cold at this time of year and can incapacitate even the strongest swimmer.

"It is not advisable for anyone to enter the water to retrieve a ball, especially at night."
