HIGH school pupils were given an insight to what life was like inside the First World War trenches.

The youngsters from Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan in Abergele took part in the experience at Bodelwyddan Castle.

The event was organised by Lorraine Lister, marketing officer for Bodelwyddan Castle and Trust, and included Great War activities such as drill, trench and artefact handling plus a chance to explore the woodlands surrounding the castle.

Pupils also heard what a soldier’s life was like fighting on the battlefields and living in the trenches from Jerry Bone, a volunteer at the castle who helped set up the exhibition. Pupils were also able to dress up in authentic costumes.

Teacher Stephanie Brettle said: "This was a unique and memorable opportunity to discover what life was like on the front line.

"Based on detailed research, the trenches have been painstakingly recreated to take visitors on an authentic, atmospheric and poignant journey back to the time of the Great War.

"Pupils learnt about the challenges of building the trenches, what life was like for the soldiers within their cramped spaces and the hopes and horrors of trench warfare.

"They saw the inside of a front line first aid post and learnt what happened to soldiers not fatally wounded and discovered how song, poetry and art defined the era."
