Dinghy sailing in Rhyl looks to have a future after an overwhelming show of support.

More than 60 people flocked to join Rhyl Yacht Club for a ‘taster day’ to register their interest in reviving dinghy sailing at the Marine Lake after four years of dormancy.

Ex-Commodore David Clayton, the taster day’s organiser, said: “We were overwhelmed by the support. After four years of no dinghy sailing and perfectly good equipment wasting away, we’re pleased to see people haven’t strayed too far.”

The Journal reported in April on the Mr Clayton’s last-ditch efforts to regenerate dinghy sailing on the lake by gazing interest with an ‘equipment tasting day,’ which led to a ‘practical taster on Sunday, May 13’.

Mr Clayton added: “The article in the Journal had a really big impact. Many of the people who came told me they saw the article. it really was a case of a picture painting a thousand words of our situation.”

Now the yacht club has concrete support from interested sailors – who ranged from nine to 75 – and a new partnership to train Rhyl Sea Cadets, it has received consent from the harbour master and the town council to run sailing courses from, dinghies to ocean sailing, at the Marine Lake during the summer months.
