Rhyl's new skate park has opened - four weeks ahead of schedule.

The park, which features state-of-the-art equipment, opened today (Friday) on a disused green at East Parade Bowls Club.

Denbighshire County Council have worked with Alliance Leisure to build the new facility.

Cllr Bobby Feeley, the council’s lead member for well-being and independence, said: “I’m thrilled to see this new skate park open.  We decided to open it early in good faith because we know how excited the users are. There is still some landscaping to be completed and we hope this will be respected during its completion.

“The skate park offers young people a free facility to enjoy as well as providing a great attraction for visitors.

“We want to create a more vibrant active zone and the skate park and bowling club, along with SC2, will offer a great mix of facilities which will attract more footfall and business to this area of the promenade – all year round.

“I’d like to thank East Parade Bowls Club for their support with this project.

“As a council we want to make Denbighshire a place where young people want to live as well as supporting well-being and economic prosperity, and this new skate park helps achieve those aims.”

The Council is also looking at the possibility of bringing the Taste Academy building back into use as a café with the higher footfall expected in the area.

The Council previously held a public consultation during which more than 200 people had the chance to influence the new skate park’s design and location.

East Parade Bowls Club comprises of four greens and the fourth green is home to the new skate park.

It forms part of the council’s wider regeneration work which includes SC2, a waterpark with indoor and outdoor flume rides, children’s water slides and Wales’ first TAG Active indoor obstacle course as well as the 1891 restaurant.

Cllr Alan James, Rhyl Mayor, added: “This is another piece of the exciting regeneration jigsaw picture of Rhyl slotting into place.

"It is particularly pleasing Denbighshire County Council has not only been able to deliver a quality facility for our skateboarding fraternity but have been able to open it so far ahead of schedule.”

Work started on March 19 and was due to last until June.

The town's new waterpark is being built on the site of the former skate park on West Parde.
