THE cancelled steam hauled Ynys Mon Express, due to have run next Saturday has been rescheduled for September.

The train was to have run between Crewe and Holyhead, hauled by the recently built Tornado, a recreation of the LNER A1 pacific class of main line steam engines.

A spokesman for the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, owners of Tornado, said: “We have had to reschedule the trip because we encountered a major mechanical problem. We were unable to find a substitute steam engine to replace Tornado in the short time available.”

“The problem is being investigated at the moment, but we think it will cost around £20,000 to fix.”

The spokesman added: “The new date will be Saturday September 29. It can’t be before then because the trip included a stop in Bangor and an excursion to the Welsh Highland Railway, and this was the first date when they had the capacity to cope.”

Tornado has previously travelled along the North Wales Coast line, and along with other steam specials it has drawn crowds at every station and viewing point it passes.
