A GOLFER is following his father's footsteps after becoming Abergele Golf Club's head professional.

Iain Runcie is retiring after 30 years in his role at the club.

His son, Stuart Runcie, is now taking on the role, which involves looking after the needs of members, teaching, retail and helping the club achieve its goals.

Stuart, 32, who is married to Kate and has a seven-month-old baby Megan, has been involved with the club since he was two years' old.

He said: “It is an absolute honour to take over from my dad.

"I have big shoes to fill as his reputation speaks for itself, so I hope to do my best to reach his high standards in business and coaching."

The former Ysgol Emrys Ap Iwan pupil started helping out with coaching aged 16 and working in the shop.

He turned professional in 2008.

Iain, 60, said: “I took over as head professional in 1988. Highlights over the years have included teaching Becky Brewerton from aged 12 and her being a two-time Solheim Cup member and being a member of the Curtis Cup

"Another highlight has been both my boys playing for Wales: Adam winning all three national junior events in one year and Stuart representing Wales in the Professional Golfers Association European national team championships twice."

He added: “The role of a professional has evolved – from a teacher and a player into more of an ambassador-type role.”

Iain, who is married to Pat, added that he decided to retire following 30 years of “hard work, long hours and ill health”.

“What I will miss most is the other members,” he said.

“I consider them all as my friends and they will be very much missed.

“My plans for retirement are to play more golf. I play on the bowls team for Abergele, so I can also give more of my time to that.”

Stuart said: “I will be running the day-to-day duties of the shop and for the club, managing a member of staff.

"I will also be continuing my role as a coach.

"We have a new teaching academy room being developed here at Abergele which will have an impressive indoor teaching studio."

He added: “Dad has given me many tips over the years. –mainly to stay calm, organised, to work hard and most importantly, to enjoy every minute.”

Iain added that he was “very proud” that his son was taking over his position.

“I know the golf club is in very safe hands with Stuart," he said.

"I am pleased that he is pursuing a career I know he loves as much as me.

"I have no doubts that he will be a success.”
