A Rhyl cafe has done its bit to ensure the homeless stay warm this winter.

Coltman’s Rumbling Tum cafe on Sussex Street has begun offering free weekly meals for the homeless in the town, starting with a beef, pork and dumpling stew.

The idea to provide food arose from the cafe’s Suspended Coffee scheme, where customers can donate a coffee or a meal to a kitty for homeless customers, which has been co-organised with Vicky Eastick of the Souper Sunday soup kitchen at The Dewi Sant centre on Clwyd Street.

Luke Coltman-Jones, owner, said: “We have about five regulars who come in for a coffee in the morning, but we noticed that the pot had been a bit empty for the past few weeks.

“Andy, our chef decided that he was going to make a stew, and we decided to go with it.”

The new scheme joins a recent project ran with Belinda Pinups beauty salon on Vale Road, supplying homeless people with hot water bottles that can be filled during the cafe’s opening hours.

Mr Coltman-Jones added: “There’s not really much support in Rhyl for homeless people during the week. Some of them can maybe get shelter for two nights a week, and there are a few other bits and pieces.

“We’re really just looking for ways to help them warm up in the morning, especially as it’s so cold at this time of year.”
