A FORMER Army corporal was made a lord and given an imitation crown to honour his prestigious new title during his 100th birthday celebration.

Ken Lewis, who served in the Royal Corps of Signals, worked for glass manufacturer Pilkington for 19 years and was part of the team who built the windows for the Concorde supersonic airliner.

He celebrated at the Abbeyfield sheltered home Prestatyn.

Ken was joined by staff, residents and the Mayor of Prestatyn, Cllr Gerry Frobisher.

His lordship title was bought for him by well-wishers and relates to a small patch of land near Coniston in the Lake District.

A spokesman from Abbeyfield said: “He (Ken) had a really good birthday. He is still talking about it now.

“He is such a proud man, always dressed very well and still very active.

“He has received past awards for his bravery.

“Amongst countless other gifts, Ken also received the title of ‘Lord’. We got him the title for his birthday. It is all legal.

“We all had a wonderful time celebrating his 100th birthday. The mayor joined in the celebrations and Ken received a card from the Queen, commemorating the momentous occasion.”

Ken said: “I had a wonderful time. I have been at Abbeyfield for about eight years.

“I had a card from the Queen; we sang songs and I had a big birthday cake. It was the first time I had met the mayor”

The Abbeyfield spokesman added: “I know Ken and everyone at Abbeyfield Prestatyn would like to thank all who attended, especially Gerry Frobisher, and the staff at Crofts Club and restaurant for helping to make his day extra special.”
