ST ASAPH Cathedral has been chosen to host BBC’s Songs of Praise.

Congregations, choirs and singers from across North Wales are being invited to join a massed choir for the tv programme.

Filming will be take place at the Cathedral on Tuesday, June 13. The place of worship is among the first few locations chosen for filming the programme by new independent production company, Cardiff based Avanti Media.

The Dean of St Asaph Cathedral, the Very Revd Nigel Williams said: “We are delighted to be chosen as a venue for recording Songs of Praise. As we know from the North Wales International Music Festival which is held in the Cathedral each year and other concerts and events, the acoustics in the building are fabulous.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming as many local people as possible to the Cathedral to sing in the choir and to working with the production team to produce a great television programme.”

The massed choir will be led by Trystan Lewis who has worked with choirs in the Vale of Clwyd as well as the Mold Choral Society. Playing the organ is Graham Eccles who lives in St Asaph and is a former director of music at the Cathedral. Both men are involved in the St Asaph Cathedral Voluntary Choir.

A letter – from producer of Songs of Praise, Karen Hannah, – read: “Songs of Praise has been championing Christian music for over 55 years and continues to be enormously popular. For this to continue into the future we need the participation of people like yourself and so we’d be grateful if you could encourage others to take part.”

The recording of Songs of Praise will take place between 6.30pm until 9.30pm. Anyone who would like to take part is asked to send their name, the name of their church or choir and the number of people wishing to take part to SOPcongregations@avantimedia.tv.

Any keen singers are asked to include their voice part (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). Include ‘St Asaph Recording’ in your subject header.
