WORK on the £4.2 million refurbishment of the former Nova Centre in Prestatyn will start in the new year.

Contractors from ISG will start construction on the site from January 5, with the redevelopment scheduled to be completed by July 2015.

The refurbishment works will include a new entrance, café facilities, a new fitness suite with multi-functional studio space, new changing both in the pool side and the dry side changing rooms, three promenade side retail units, refurbishment of all toilet and circulation areas and construction of a large soft play area.

The 25m 4 lane swimming pool will be retained along with the small splash pool.

The toilet block alongside the Nova Centre will also be refurbished along with a section of the promenade.

Cllr Huw Jones, cabinet lead member for Leisure, said: “The re-development of the Nova Centre is an important piece of the jig-saw in our vision to develop the leisure offer on the coast.

“We want to provide first class leisure facilities that will encourage more people to get involved in activities, providing high quality settings for the benefit of the local community and visitors.

"The start of the works on the Nova site signals a major step forward in the facility's history. The new development will be a great addition to Prestatyn and comes hot on the heels of our development of the North Wales Bowls Centre".

Enabling works have already taken place over recent weeks, to enable to main works to begin in the new year.

Denbighshire County Council's Leisure Services has worked with its partner Alliance Leisure Services to develop the major development proposals.

The site is expected to open between 6.30am and 10.30pm seven days a week throughout the year.

Prestatyn Town Council agreed to provide £28,000 of funding towards work on the external promenade and toilets which have been costed at £208,000.

Denbighshire Council will be providing the remainder of the funding.
