A DERELICT Rhyl hotel is set to be demolished to make way for a six-floor apartment building.

The Grange Hotel was destroyed by a fire in March 2008 and previous plans to redevelop the Grade II listed building, and turn it into apartments were made in 2009, but were withdrawn that same year.

In 2013 the site was purchased by the applicant A & J Coombs and a new planning application has been submitted to Denbighshire Council.

The application includes the demolition of the easterly villa and westerly annex and the construction of 44 apartments to include 21 on site parking spaces.

The application reads: "The current proposal includes for the complete site clearance and demolition of the remaining dilapidated Easterly Villa and remaining West Annexe.

"This we feel is justified by the very dilapidated state of both buildings and their condition after many and various acts of vandalism.

"Acts of vandalism and trespass continue to be a problem despite efforts to resist further deterioration and attacks by people and the removal of salvageable components.

"The cleared brown field site will support a single building of one, two and three bed-roomed residential units. These are arranged in single storey and duplex configurations.

"The proposed building has been arranged on six floors."

The application is set to be considered by Denbighshire Council's planning committee at a later date.

In May 2012 the hotel was subject of another arson attack.
