A MOTHER and daughter duo have raised over £3000 for the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

On Saturday, May 13, Maggie and Catrin Griffith from Clawddnewydd shaved their heads in Ruthin town centre raising over £3,000 for the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Maggie lost her husband, Dewi, who died of kidney cancer in April 2004. Her and daughter Catrin, 29, wanted to show their thanks for the care Dewi received whilst being treated at Glan Clwyd Hospital. The money raised from Saturday will go to support others who are receiving care in the hospital.

Maggie said: “Dewi was a keen fundraiser himself, he loved throwing himself into community projects and I know he’d be right behind us if he could see us now.

“Catrin and I wanted to do something fun together that was drastic enough to make people really think about why we are fundraising.”

Catrin was only 16 when her father passed away. Straight from having her head shaved for charity, she is now in training and will be joining Mike Peters and his supporters on the third day of the annual By Your Side Walk next month. Her and sisters, Ellie and Laura, will be walking the 12 miles between Trefor Canal Basin to Ponderosa Cafe above Llangollen in honour of their father to raise awareness of kidney cancer.

She said: "The head shaving was a bit daunting, but by doing something dramatic we hope that we can show others affected by cancer that they're not alone. I’m sure Dad would be proud us for doing something to make a statement and for being bold. Bold and bald.

"We want to do as much as I can to keep dad's memory alive and to make a difference to help other families who are facing a tough time like we did.

"My sisters and I are really excited to be joining Mike Peters on the By Your Side walk. The walk is a great way to raise funds for local cancer services but also to raise awareness of all kinds of cancer, including kidney cancer which a lot of people don't fully understand."

If you'd like to join Catrin, Ellie and Laura as they walk with Mike Peters on Saturday, June 17 you can register online at www.byyoursideappeal.org. Registration costs £20 and all money goes direct to help people with cancer.
