A PRESTATYN cinema is ready to start its new era off “on the right foot”.

Rob Arthur, of Aurora Leisure Ltd – new leaseholder of the Scala cinema – will hold two public meetings ahead of Friday’s (July, 3) expected opening.

Mr Arthur, who last week was still taking Christmas decorations down left by the previous Trust – including a “lone reindeer” – said that he feels it is important to begin the Scala’s new chapter with an “open and honest dialogue”.

“I am delighted to say I’ve had a really warm welcome to the area,” he commented. “Our intention is ensure the Scala is welcoming, vibrant and an exciting addition to the High Street and is there to serve the community, providing exactly the kinds of entertainment and facilities for as many groups as possible. That is why we want to hold these public meetings so that we start off on the right foot from the word go.

“Everybody is really eager. We want to make sure we get it right from the start. There is such a high level of support from the community.

“We are doing everything we can now to get ready for the opening – we want to deliver on dates. Last week, it was all about being practical - I was sweeping floors and taking down some of the decorations that had been left behind. It is great to see everyone working really hard and it is a big improvement on what it was.”

Aurora Leisure Ltd was set up in 2012. Mr Arthur was managing director of Apollo Cinemas, overseeing an estate of 14 cinemas and 83 screens including Rhyl until its sale in 2012. In addition, he has international cinema opening and operating experience including the development of the award-winning Thurso Cinema in the Scottish Highlands.

The Scala now boasts Sony Digital Cinema 4k projectors and a management team has been recruited.

Huw Jones, Denbighshire's lead member for leisure and tourism and youth, said: "We were pleased to select Rob as our new tenant and operator of the cinema and it has been great to work with him and learn more about his exciting plans for the venue.

"From the start, we were committed to finding an operator and making sure the facility remained open for the community. We know it's taken some time but with new, top of the range projection equipment now installed, I'm sure everyone will agree it's been worth the wait and we are grateful for the support of the public.

"Judging by Rob’s notable success with similar ventures across Scotland, we are confident we will see the same success here in the Scala, which is a key asset for Prestatyn town centre and the economy."

Cllr Bob Paterson, Mayor of Prestatyn, added: "We are looking forward to the Scala reopening and welcome the work that Rob is doing to engage with the community. The Scala will become a central part of our town's vibrant events' programme so we are delighted it is in such good hands."

Public meetings will be held at the Scala on Wednesday, July 1 and will be at 4pm and 6pm.

Mr Arthur added: “We are on target for Friday. The challenge is really meeting every expectation.”
