TWO Abergele residents are taking part in the Mongol Rally 2014 to raise funds for the charities Awyr Las, CLIC Sargent and Cool Earth.
Bleddyn Davies, 25 and Dave Howell, 28, both who work at Abergele Leisure Centre, started their journey in France on Sunday, July 20. They will be travelling 10,000 miles through 17 countries before reaching their final destination of UlaanBaatar in Mongolia.
Bleddyn’s mother, Llinos Davies, said: “On the first day, Bleddyn and Dave drove in a total of four countries, England, France, Belgium and Germany, before camping in Germany for the night on July 20. Since then they have continued east through the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan where they boarded a ferry to cross the Caspian Sea.”
The duo, who have named their team the Bearded Dragons and are driving a Suzuki Jimny, said: “We are raising funds for CLIC Sargent as David's cousin Sam was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour about 12 months ago. It has been a difficult year for all involved but having the support of CLIC Sargent nurse Rhian has made the journey considerably easier. The work she has done and continues to do really is fantastic and the family are forever grateful.
“We are also donating through Awyr Las Blue Sky for the children's ward in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. The staff in the children's ward have also been amazing during Sam's treatment, even saving his life on a couple of occasions, and Bleddyn's family have also had a fantastic experience of the ward, so we feel this is another deserving charity of our fundraising."
Part of the criteria of completing the rally is to contribute part of the sponsorship towards Cool Earth, a charity which places indigenous people back in control of the world’s most endangered rainforest. So far they have raised £1,336, exceeding their £1000 target.
