IT’S not unusual to associate Tom Jones with his Welsh roots, but this weekend will be the singer’s first ever live show in North Wales.

The music icon, who is one of the most famous and celebrated Welshmen in history, will make his first appearance in the region at Access All Eirias in Colwyn Bay on Friday.

In an exclusive interview, he spoke about how much he is looking forward to the event.

Jones said: “Believe it or not, this will be my first big outdoor show in North Wales.

“Coming back to Wales to perform is always a treat and in the fantastic location of the Eirias Stadium we're going to put on a hell of a show.”

Jones’ historic visit to Eirias will be one of many shows the busy singer will play this year.

He added: “I've just finished 10 shows in the states that went really well, with my band from Nashville.

“We played a lot of songs from my two recent albums Praise and Blame and Spirit in the Room and tried out new arrangements on some favorite tracks like Delilah, Kiss and It's not unusual.

“It's important for me to keep reinventing songs with the band. It's good to come up with different arrangements to keep the hit tunes fresh and to keep us all in our toes.

“I'm playing over 40 shows [this year]. I'm performing at places I've never been to before - like Colwyn Bay.

"It's always good to visit new places. And I'm doing some festivals, which I always like.

"It's so nice to see kid's faces when they've never seen me play live before.

“At festivals there are lots of people who see you for the very first time, which is always great.

“It happens with every generation. Whenever I put out new work I'm introduced to a new audience.

“If new material gets a good reaction they'll release some back catalogue and often people like what they hear.”

Fans, who have paid up to £50 to see Jones live onstage, are expected to flood Parc Eirias for the performance, which also includes singers Sally Barker and James Walsh.

The 74-year-old is confident he still has what it takes to wow the crowds.

Jones added: “It's great fun and a privilege to share the bill with some fantastic acts - there's some very talented artists working out there.

“I'm just thankful that my voice is still powerful.

“With singers, the vibrato can get slower with age and your start to sound like an engine turning over.

“But thank God that hasn't happened to me.

“I'm still singing naturally and I don't have to put a spike into it.

“I look after myself, too - I drink plenty
of water, I don't get dehydrated and I make sure I get eight hours sleep.

“Singing to me is like acting. You take on a role and a song to me is a role.
“It's like Mel Gibson doing Hamlet, whose interpretation would be completely different than a performance by Laurence Oliver.”

The two-day Access All Eirias event will also include performances from Jones’ BBC The Voice co-host Jessie J, as well as Neon Jungle, Lawson and Hollywood Ending on Saturday.

Jones said: "Now with The Voice, I go to restaurants in London and get kids shouting at me in the street.

“Even when I disguise myself in a hoodie and dark glasses. I get shouts outs from kids. The hardest part of The Voice is saying no and shattering contestant's dreams.

“I'm always pleased when it's up to the viewers to decide and it's out of my hands. I still ponder, weeks later, whether I made the right choice or not?

"We all learned a lot from the first year, and applied some good changes to year two.

“So by series Three people knew what to expect, the production had settled in and the addition of coaches worked well.”

Gates open 4pm both days.
