AN investigation into the standard of care of psychiatric patients at a North Wales hospital has been extended to cover all mental health services for adults across the region.

In December last year the Tawel Fan ward on the Ablett Unit at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan, was closed temporarily because of concerns.

The decision was made after a multi-agency meeting involving the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, North Wales Police, the Health Inspectorate Wales and local authority.

No details of the concerns have been released but the ward remains closed and the investigation is still ongoing.

In a report to yesterday’s meeting of the Health Board acting chief executive Geoff Lang says they have liaised closely with a number of carers and their families to identify any specific concerns in addition to the original matters which led to the closure.

Mr Lang said: “It is essential that these experiences are fully investigated to determine any corrective action required to ensure patient safety and quality of care when the ward re-opens,”

"The Health Board has also commissioned a wider external review of older person’s mental health services across North Wales in light of concerns regarding Tawel Fan ward and other concerns.

“This review will examine the models in place for delivering older persons’ mental health services and advise on the governance systems which the Board requires to have assurance regarding the quality and safety of care.”

This extended review is expected to be complete by September.
