A ST Asaph man is embarking on a 24-hour football marathon in memory of his stillborn daughter.

Mike Wilson, aged 42, of Bryn Gobaith, has organised the sponsored five-a-side football match in aid of the charity SANDS, a stillborn and neonatal death charity.

Hollie Wilson was stillborn on December 26, 2012 at 10.30am Ysbyty Glan Clwyd after Mike’s wife, Vicki, experienced discomfort on Christmas Day.
Unfortunately their loss is not rare.

Mr Wilson said: “We struggled to come to terms with the death of our daughter and the first few weeks were particularly difficult.

“We both found the support of SANDS a great help. It allowed us to speak to people who have suffered similar circumstances and realise we are not alone. So it would be nice to give something back for everything they have done for us.

Every day in the UK 17 babies are stillborn or die shortly after birth, which is over 6,000 children a year - one of the highest rates in the developed world.

Mr Wilson said: “One of the few things that gave me relief and respite during this sadness was to meet up with friends and play football, so I feel that this way of raising money would be a fitting tribute to our beautiful daughter Hollie.”

The event will begin at 6pm on Friday, June 13 and will continue until 6pm on Saturday, June 14 at St Asaph leisure centre.

There will then be a dinner and charity auction at the Faenol Fawr Hotel, Bodelwyddan and there have already been plenty of generous donations to the event from various sporting figures throughout the country.

Mr Wilson said: “We have a signed Juan Mata and Wales shirt available, plus former rugby star Shane Williams has promised to donate something, as have the staff at Bolton Wanderers football club.

“We have already raised £2,000 towards our initial total of £5,000, so I am confident that we can reach our goal once everything has been concluded.”
Tickets for the dinner and disco are priced at £20 and to order your tickets contact Mike on 07968 478850.
