Plans have been submitted to the council

A PUB company has submitted plans to open a convenience store on part of a carpark belonging to a Prestatyn pub.

Punch Taverns, who own the Jolly Sailor pub in Ffordd Penrhwylfa, have applied to Denbighshire County Council for planning permission to build a 325 sqm retail store.

Punch Taverns, who have owned the public house for a number of years, expressed that the car park is underused and that part of it is “surplus to requirements”.

The proposal states that “discussions are underway with a number of convenience stores” in terms of who will operate the unit - but it has been rumoured that Co-op will take the reins.

A Punch Taverns spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a planning application has been submitted to develop on the car park at the Jolly Sailor and we are awaiting the outcome.

“This application will not affect the pub and it will continue to trade whilst ensuring sufficient car parking space. We believe that the car park is currently surplus to requirements and we plan to better utilise the land and improve the area for the local community.”

The proposed building is expected to single storey with a brick finish that will keep with the existing public house; it will create a number of full and part time jobs and “secure the long term future of the existing public house”.

Planning permission is expected to be given the green light.
