AN ANNOUNCEMENT on the future of care of the sickest babies in north Wales should be made “as soon as possible.”

Welsh Shadow Health Minister and Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has demanded that First Minister Carwyn Jones “end uncertainty” over the future of a new neonatal centre in north Wales.

An independent panel set-up to look into the placement of a neonatal centre in either Ysbyty GlanClwyd or Wrexham Maelor Hospital reported their findings to the First Minister last week.

Mr Millar said: “North Wales’ baby care services have been left hanging in the balance for far too long and I urge the First Minister to make a swift decision on this.

“I believe that Ysbyty Glan Clwyd would be the perfect site and I have been pressing the First Minister to opt for this location.

“Now the independent panel have reported back to him, there really is no need to delay this any further.

“The North Wales neonatal services saga has dragged on for far too long already.”

The First Minister first announced plans for the new centre last November.
