A SCHOOLGIRL whose mum is battling bowel cancer is shaving her head to raise money for charity.

Coral Donachie, 14, who attends Ysgol Glan Clwyd, decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK after her mum, Adrienne Hartup, was diagnosed with condition last July.

Coral, of Rhyl, who has two sisters, Yorke, 18, and Bryana, 12, and two brothers, Rhys, 16, and Haydn, 9, said her mum was “slowly recovering” and she is keen to raise as much money as possible before shaving her head on Thursday, April 10.

She said: “I am hoping to raise around £300, if not more, in order to help many people going through what my mum has and is going through.

“After my mum was diagnosed, I decided I wanted to help these people that are suffering and after I lot of thinking I decided I would shave my head to raise money for cancer research UK.

“Luckily my mum was able to be treated and is slowly recovering, but not everyone is as lucky. Scientists need as much money as possible so one day there will be a cure for cancer.”

Mrs Hartup, 46, said how proud she was of her “beautiful girl”. She added that Coral had already raised £183 and £200 on a sponsor form.

She said: “I was diagnosed with bowel cancer last year. It came as a massive shock as I assumed I was going to be told it was piles.

“I was referred to the North Wales Cancer Unit in September and following MRI and CT scans began a five week course of radiotherapy.

“I had a follow up MRI in January which indicated that the tumour had shrunk significantly which was amazing news. Later that month I had surgery to remove the remainder and I am now undergoing six months of chemotherapy to try and ensure no cancer is left behind. The staff at the Cancer Unit have been fantastic, especially the radiotherapy team.

“Coral is extremely brave. She is the middle child. Her youngest brother also has Down’s syndrome and Coral looks after him a lot, especially when I am unwell.”
