THE Chair of the Scala has expressed how “heartened” she is that residents have back a campaign to support the Prestatyn based cinema.
Rhiannon Wyn Hughes said she had been overwhelmed by the response by the public wishing to help the Be Part of It campaign - “a lot of people doing a little to help”, that was introduced following the announcement by Denbighshire County Council of a £12,000 cut in funding for the cinema which employs 14 members of staff.
A weekly lottery has been relaunched to fill the gap left by budget cuts and a street collection is due to take place on Saturday.
Ms Hughes said: “The Scala has become the community hub of the town where many new friendships have been formed and it has become an important part of many peoples lives.
“As well as the Lottery, we are aware that many people in Prestatyn have not yet visited the Scala so the campaign is three fold - join the lottery, bring a friend and if you haven’t been in the Scala before, come in and have a look around.”
More than 8000 leaflets, funded by the Friends of the Scala, have been printed in order to raise the profile of the campaign.
Town councillors have been leafleting their wards but volunteers are still needed and leaflets are available at the Scala for those who can help.
Cllr Sherry Edwards, said: “I had no idea just how many people are supportive of the Scala, help is coming in from all over the place.
“We have been extremely lucky and have managed to cover most areas of the town now - despite rather unpleasant weather conditions for our foot soldiers. You would never chose to have a campaign in the winter months but Prestatyn people are showing the same community spirit and eagerness to support something they believe in.”
